Top Five Poker Tournament Tips

Playing in poker tournaments is entirely different then playing in cash games and you need to use a completely different strategy if you want to be successful. I've compiled five tips that I feel are very important for new tournament players to learn before they sit down and actually start playing for real money.
A Never play with more then 1%-5% of your bankroll based on the size. If you have a $100 bankroll then you'll probably end up playing in $5 tournaments, which is 5% of your bankroll, but if you have a $1000 bankroll then you may only play in $10 tournaments, which is only 1% of your bankroll.
A Only play in large tournaments if you have the time too commit. It takes hours to make it deep in a large MTT and you definitely don't want to be rushing your game because you don't have the time.
A Always write down notes about your opponents when they make weird plays or big raises, as it'll help you in the future. It could end up helping you out in the same tournament or in a tournament in a month from now, but taking notes of the players you play against is an important part of online poker.
A Try to avoid playing in rebuy tournaments initially because they can be a huge drain on your bankroll. It doesn't take long to rebuy several times in these tournaments and the next thing you know you're in the event for 3-4x the regular buy-in of the event. These tournaments are also harder to win because there are a ton more chips in play due to all of the rebuys and add-ons that take place.
A You need to be willing to gamble a bit in poker tourneys because if you wait for the best hands the entire time you're going to end up losing due to the blinds eating you up. In order to make it deep in a large MTT it takes a few lucky hands where you need to survive a coin flip or close too a coin flip.
